Emily Asenath-Smith, PhD
Title: Research Materials Engineer
Affiliated Lab: Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory
Research Focus:
With significant expertise in surface and interface chemistry, CRREL Research Materials Engineer Emily Asenath-Smith, PhD is uniquely suited to take on a wide range of cold regions challenges. As the program lead for ice adhesion, she both leads basic research efforts and designs novel testing approaches to meet the needs of a diverse customer base. Leveraging her experience, Asenath-Smith has built an entirely new interdisciplinary research program on ice composites, bridging nanoscale structure to macroscale performance for cold regions installations.
My research interests are firmly grounded in the fundamentals of materials science—the structure-property-processing relationships of materials. With my team, I focus on surfaces and interfaces in materials, phenomena which drive many fundamental challenges in water treatment technologies, ice adhesion, and composite materials. Woven throughout these research topics is the common goal of identifying the fundamental variables that connect laboratory scale experiments to macroscale implementation of technologies, so that the research performed by my team can directly benefit the US Army and the security of the Nation.
