Deployable Expedient Traffic Entry Regulator (DETER)
Innovative and versatile barrier that provides fast protection in multiple scenarios
The Deployable Expedient Traffic Entry Regulator (DETER) is an active vehicle barrier developed by ERDC’s Geotechnical & Structures Laboratory that serves as an expedient access control solution to protect critical assets and soft targets from vehicular attacks. The friction-based barrier is integrated into the standard QuadCon ISO container form factor for easy storage, transport, and deployment. This modular, kitted, and rapidly deployable barrier is effective for various lane widths, road surfaces, and environmental conditions. DETER is an innovative and versatile barrier that provides fast protection in multiple scenarios, making it a valuable system to be used in Multi-Domain Operations.
Benefits:
- Modular: multiple units (8’ lengths) can be joined using standard QuadCon corner castings
- Rapid deployment: “barrier in a box” can be placed or recovered in less than 30 minutes
- Robust: designed for large vehicle threat
- Simple: non-anchored system requires no special equipment or extra tooling
- Versatile: kitted, preassembled and suitable for urban environments
Applications:
- Military (e.g., field operations, bases)
- Location security (e.g. Capital building bases, event venues)
- Homeland security (e.g., borders, threats)
- Roadways (e.g., temporary vehicle crash barriers, roadblocks, construction)
- Construction (e.g., to secure temporary entrance site safety)
- Law enforcement (e.g., checkpoints, traffic)
