Rapidly Deployable Over Decking Systems
Adjustable, configurable, and adaptable decking systems for quick deployment at austere locations
Current decking systems for heavy vehicles such as tanks typically require flat and consistent terrain. They may also have complex logistics, design, and contracting time requirements. Existing decking systems that involve standard timber frame and masonry need skilled laborers or lengthy construction times, while some structures require the use of power tools or heavy equipment for assembly. Such systems were not designed for quick deployment or atypical conditions. However, to “over bridge” a damaged section of a structure or a free span for heavy vehicles to safely pass, under difficult or austere conditions, is vitally important to military, humanitarian, and other emergency operations.
ERDC’s Over-Decking System is a versatile, flexible and expeditious solution for these and many other transport challenges (see below). The technology can be assembled and then utilized to over-bridge a damaged pier deck for spans up to 46’ while accommodating an M1A1 main battle tank. The same technology allows for over-bridging of free spans and damaged or under-classed bridges up to 46’.
On- and offloading of heavy vehicles and other equipment is typically limited to designated locations, which, if destroyed, inaccessible, or under threat (e.g., due to natural disaster, military conflict, etc.), essentially renders the heavy vehicles useless. An alternate configuration of the same Over-Decking System provides an expedient ramp and platform that enables loading and unloading of rolling stock from railway lines, loading docks, roads, waterways, or other transportation modalities without the need for a fixed facility.
ERDC’s Over-Decking System enables “instant” decking systems that are simple in construction, economical to fabricate, configurable and recoverable. They do not require the use of power tools, heavy equipment, or skilled labor for assembly. The versatile, adaptable, modular design enables planning for expected conditions and adapting to actual conditions.
Benefits:
- Adaptable to many environments: Can be deployed in less-than-ideal conditions, such as uneven surfaces and compromised preexisting structures, as well as under various on/offloading requirements and conditions
- Rapid and easily installation: Offers quick assembly and deployment without the use of power tools or heavy machinery
- Cost saving: Is economical to fabricate and requires no skilled labor or advanced logistics
- Prototyped and demonstrated
Applications:
- Military
- Disaster relief
- Humanitarian organizations
- Emergency response
